In memory of Margaret (Maggie) Palmieri who lost her life in an accident during the Mountain Mama Road Bike Challenge on August 2, 2003.
"She died doing what she loved to do the most."
- Jim Palmieri
Maggie's husband, Dr. Jim Palmieri, has decided to dedicate his life to improving rural health care in Virginia. He has established the Margaret Palmieri Rural Health Scholarship at the Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine in Blacksburg, Virginia.  Maggie's legacy is best summed up by Dr. Palmieri's own words.

"Next Thursday [8-14-03], the first class of 150 students will begin their medical career at VCOM (I teach there now).  I promise with my heart that no student will ever pass through the school's doors without knowing from me the importance and responsibility they have to help people in need within rural Virginia.  If I can influence just one student each year through this scholarship, to dedicate their lives to helping people in rural Virginia, then maybe we can avoid what happened last Saturday morning. Maggie's legacy will live on silently and quietly yet in powerful ways.  If you...would like to do something in Maggie's name,  please make a donation to the Margaret Palmieri Rural Health Scholarship.  Even just a dollar would be fine, I just want the scholarship to be made up from the love and support of all the people who were so special to her and were there. VCOM will soon become one of the major medical influences in this part of Virginia and I would love to have Maggie's legacy be an important part of that.  She can continue to work her magic.  Maggie would be so happy to know that her cyclist friends that day could participate in helping out...
